Wine Movies You Have to Watch in 2025

I am a movie lover. Especially since having kids. As soon as the little tykes are in bed for the day, Mr Spittoon and I grab some wine and laze in front of the couch.
For awhile there, there weren’t many decent wine movies out there, the most famous probably being Sideways (2004) which recked havoc for poor Merlot. However there are quite a few wine movies around now that are definitely worth watching.
So today I want to share with you some of the classics and some of the new wine movies on the scene that I think you might like. Grab a glass of wine and your TV remote or laptop and enjoy!

SOMM 1 (2013)
Watch if you like: Wine documentaries and if you are studying a wine course of your own, you might pick up some great study tips
What to drink while watching it: Vallin Wine if you can find some which is a collab between Eric Railsbac and Dustin Wilson who feature in the film, otherwise why not grab a few bottles and blind taste a few as you watch the movie
The first SOMM movie (yes there are 3 of them) is a documentary series which follow eager somm’s on their journey to become Master Sommeliers. The master sommelier exam is know to be notoriously difficult, which is probably why there are less than 300 Master Sommeliers in the world!
It truly is amazing what these budding Master Somm’s can do, and if you’re a wine lover like me then you’ll find this documentary super intriguing.
Where to watch: If wine movies really are your thing, grab a SOMM TV subscription (and use the TCBLOG code for your discount) to stream these 3 documentaries alongside a range of other wine, food, travel, and hospitality movies and docos! It’s the Netflix for wine lovers!
SOMM – Into The Bottle (2015)
Watch if you like: If you want to learn more about wine from around the world
What to drink while watching it: So many possible choices based on the movie, you could go for Vintage Champagne, Alsace Riesling or something from Robert Mondavi Winery (available at Dan Murphys here in Australia)
SOMM Into The Bottle tells wine stories from around the world. Including from some of the most famous (and expensive) wineries. There is also the likes of Wine Folly and a few of the Master Sommeliers from the first SOMM movie featured.
The documentary is divided into 10 chapters where 10 super impressive wines are opened. Your taste buds will be absolutely salivating.

SOMM 3 (2018)
Watch if you like: Learning more about wine
What to drink while watching it: Pinot Noir
Wine documentary, SOMM 3 is the third movie in the SOMM series. It features the Master Somm’s from the previous films, including the renowned, Fred Dame, alongside big wine world names such as Jancis Robinson and Steven Spurrier. The movie centres around two blind wine tastings reminiscent of the 1976 Judgement of Paris (make sure to watch Bottle Shock mentioned below for a loosely based movie on this).
Morale of the movie: “People should be drinking what they like, not what other people tell them to drink” – Eric Railsbac

Blind Ambition
I was kindly invited to watch an online preview of this movie free of charge. Thank you Madman Films.
Watch if you like: Wine documentaries
What to drink while watching it: A delicious South African wine would be my pick
Blind Ambition is newly released (March 2022) and is directed by Warwick Ross and Rob Coe, the team behind the popular wine documentary narrated by Russell Crowe, Red Obsession. The documentary follows four Zimbabwean refugees who become some of the top sommeliers in South Africa. They decide to compete for the global title of ‘The World Blind Wine Tasting Champions’ – an annual event organised by French magazine La Revue du Vin de France where teams from countries around the world compete in France every year.
It’s the Cool Runnings of wine movies and is truly an uplifting doco. Plus it’ll make you want to visit African wine country stat 😉

Wine Movies on Netflix
A Perfect Pairing (2022)
Watch if you like: Rom-Coms (Romantic Comedies)
What to drink while watching it: Australian Chardonnay
If you’re looking for an easy-watching romantic comedy with some wine nuances, then A Perfect Pairing on Netflix is perfect for you. It was released in May 2022 and stars Sex/Life’s Adam Demos and ex-Nickelodeon star Victoria Justice. There’s more romance and cheesy Aussie-slang than wine. But hey, when you’re onto your second bottle of Chardonnay and in your uggs on a Friday night on the couch then you maybe have found the perfect match 😉
Watch it on: Netflix
Uncorked (2020)
Watch if you like: Hip Hop music & wine, if you enjoyed the SOMM documentaries, this is like the fiction version of it
What to drink while watching it: 19 Crimes Snoop Dogg Cali Red, one of my Gangsta Wine picks
Elijah wants to make it in the wine world as a Master Sommelier however his dad wants him to take over the family bbq meats restaurant in Memphis. There’s love, loss, humour and lots of wine study.
Both my hubby (aka Mr Spittoon) and I thoroughly enjoyed this Netflix wine movie. In fact we have watched it multiple times. It’s got a good storyline, a good soundtrack and it’s simply just a great watch.
Watch it on: Netflix
Wine Country (2019)
Watch if you like: Cheesy comedy, cliche wine tour antics
What to drink while watching it: Something cheap and cheerful that will help you get a good buzz on
I wouldn’t say this is my favourite wine movie. It’s rather cheesy and in fact it’s a bit cringeworthy in parts. I really like Amy Poehler and a few of the other cast members, it’s fine for a bit of a laugh, but there’s no serious wine talk in this movie. I did want to mention it on this list however as if you’re at least a bottle of wine deep for the night, then you may get a laugh out of it.

Wine Movies on Apple TV
Sideways (2004)
Watch if you like: American wine country, a good laugh,
What to drink while watching it: Support the underdog and drink Merlot – there are plenty of good ones out there – trust me!
I can’t do a blog post about wine movies without mentioning Sideways. It’s the American wine film that took the wine world by storm. Unfortunately for Merlot, it’s also the movie which gave it such a bad rap.
It’s a comedy-drama which is based on a book of the same name. It follows two middle-aged men in their 40s (Miles & Jack) as they road trip through Santa Barbara County wine country to celebrate Jack’s upcoming wedding. It was nominated for a bunch of awards and won Best Adapted Screenplay at the 77th Academy Awards.
Watch it on: Apple TV, Disney+, YouTube, Google Play Movies + TV and Amazon Prime (it’s approximately AU$5)
Bottle Shock (2008)
Watch if you like: Chris Pine (with long hair), 70s fashion, cars and vibes, Californian wine
What to drink while watching it: Chateau Montelena Chardonnay if you can, something from the Napa Valley or go French – Cheval Blanc if the budget allows 😉
True story based on the 1976 wine competition “Judgment of Paris”, when Californian wine defeated French wine in a blind tasting. However be warned there are a number of critics about how much of the plot is actually factual. you can read more about the Bottle Shock movie controversy on Rotten Tomatoes.
Watch it on: Apple TV, YouTube, Google Play Movies + TV
Red Obsession (2013)
Watch if you like: Wine documentaries, learning about the French wine industry
What to drink while watching it: A Bordeaux
Red Obsession is narrated by Russell Crowe and focuses on the wines of Bordeaux France and particularly looks at Chinese buyers snapping up very rare and expensive Bordeaux.
There are some absolutely amazing aerial views of Bordeaux – it’ll make you want to jump on a plane and get over there stat.
Watch it on: Apple TV, YouTube, Google Play Movies + TV
A Good Year (2006)
Watch if you like: The Kiwi actor – Russell Crowe, French wine country, romantic comedies
What to drink while watching it: Rosé wine, or even better a French Provence Rosé wine
Russell Crowe’s character, Max Skinner, is a cheeky financial trader from London who inherits his Uncle Henry’s vineyard estate in Provence in southeastern France when he dies. After his parents death as a child, he spent many summer holidays with his uncle. The storyline follows his journey both as a child and adult at the estate. There’s love, humour, crazy family relations and some pretty awful sounding wine involved.
I was recommended this wine movie by a few people, however to be honest with you, I won’t be in a rush to watch it again. There’s not a huge amount of wine in the storyline for my liking, other than it being set at a vineyard. I also don’t think it’s Russell’s best performance, but hey, I’m no film critic.
Watch it on: Apple TV (we bought it for $13. in Feb 2022 or we could have rented for $5), Disney +, YouTube, Amazon Prime
