3drops Great Southern Merlot 2017 & 2018
2018 Merlot
Tasted 21 February 2020
Last night we crackled into this new release from 3drops. Introducing their 2018 Merlot from WA’s Great Southern wine region.
A big thanks to 3drops wine and olive oil for sending this sample over and a big congratulations to the team who are celebrating their 20th vintage this year.
If you didn’t catch the 3drops newsletter yesterday, they have started to use vegan friendly fining agents for some of their 2019 releases (Chardonnay and Pinot Noir). These will be released in April and will be using a pea based protein, and a yeast derived protein.
Now back to the merlot which went so well with our kalamata olive rich dinner dish last night.
In the glass it’s a beautiful deep black cherry red. On the nose it oozes elegance with dark berries, vanilla oak and a bit of earthiness in there. While in the mouth those berries and vanilla oak flow through with fruitiness across the palate and finishing with a nice touch of silky tannins.
This wine was sent to me as a sample, I was under no obligation to post about it.

2017 Merlot
Tasted 7 November 2018
Last night Mr Spittoon and I thought we’d crack this award-winning beauty to toast the wonderful 3drops wine and olive oil owner-operator – Jo – who completed the NYC marathon on the weekend.
This 2017 Merlot from Western Australia’s Great Southern Wine Region picked up gold at the Wine Show of Western Australia and a gold at the Six Nations Wine Challenge. It had me and Mr Spittoon arguing over who would have the last few drops so it’s fair to say it lives up to its accolades.
In the glass, it’s a red shade with magenta tinge. It has a lovely brightness to the colour. We found the nose full of creamy oak, leather, cigars and fresh boysenberry. While in the mouth it’s bold and confident with an elegant clean structure and cigar/cedar, juicy black plums, spiced cherries and mouth covering tannins coming through. After the first glass, we popped it into the decanter. I can see this one really evolving over the coming years.
