The 25 Swan Valley Sparkling Wines of Christmas 2014 – 14th December
Edgecombe Brothers NV Sparkling Chardonnay
Visiting Edgecombe Bros is like stopping in to see extended family. It is so laid-back and casual that you feel right at home when you walk in the door. Plus you’re bound to walk away with a smile on your face as all the staff have such a great sense of humour. If you do a wine tasting with Aki you’ll definitely see that wine doesn’t have to be snobby, at all!
Edgie’s as the locals call it, make just the one sparkling wine and it is truly a stunner. Their bubbles is a non-vintage and made in a Blanc de Blanc style (one of my favourite styles, I am a Chardy girl through and through) which means it is made only of white grapes. The grape variety in this delicious bottle is Chardonnay. This bubbles sells for a very reasonable $26 at the cellar door, which is a great price for stocking up on a few to pop in the cupboard for those unexpected guests who may show up at your door in the festive season.
Tasting Note
I totally swooned over this bubbles, it is definitely a crowd-pleaser. I think even Santa would enjoy a flute or two of this while busy in his toy workshop or maybe Mrs Claus would when wrapping the presents 😉
On the eye it’s a bright sunny yellow with aromas of orchard fruits, citrus – particularly orange and mandarins and a touch of mineral freshness. I don’t care if I sound like a dork saying this, but it truly tastes like sunshine!! It has such a beautiful burst of apple, pear and lemon flavours and a lovely long finish which has a touch of honey in. Even writing this tasting note I am licking my lips! Pour me another please Santa!
Christmas Special
Edgie’s always have something happening at the cellar door whether it’s asparagus masterclasses, live piano on Wednesday or burger nights on Friday and Saturdays. Make sure you follow them on Facebook (link below) to keep up to date on all the festivities over summer.
About Edgecombe Brothers Winery in the Swan Valley
Edgecombe’s have a long history in the Swan Valley from when UK brothers, Don and Frank Edgecombe settled and established the family vineyard in the 1920’s.
What is quite unique about Edgecombe’s is that there is a natural wetland in the vineyard called Lake Yakine which is home to long neck tortoises! I haven’t spotted any on my visits yet, but I definitely keep an eye out for them! Edgecombe’s have a lovely restaurant setting, under beautiful wisteria and overlooking the vineyard. You can stop in for breakfast or lunch and on Friday and Saturdays as mentioned above they do takeaway and eat in burgers.
