Movie & wine matching
Yesterday I had my first Gold Class movie experience when I went to see The Avengers. It is an awesome idea: lazy boy seats, food and drink brought to you at different points throughout the movie. What more could you ask, it’s the ideal way to watch a movie.
As I was sipping on my Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc, drooling over Thor, I couldn’t help but think that I would much rather be sipping on a big, full bodied Cab as Thor’s muscles flexed and rippled under my careful watch.
The point I am getting at is that I believe your movie watching experience can be heightened if you compliment it with the right tipple. So here is my quick guide to what I believe you should be drinking with each movie genre.
Action (Disaster): This genre covers the likes of Lethal Weapon and Die Hard, due to their action-packed nature I would be keen to go for a racy Sauvignon Blanc. The acidity has the kick you need and incase you aren’t paying careful attention to getting the glass to your mouth, a wee spill here and there wont matter!
Adventure: Adventure movies undoubtedly need to be matched with an adventurous wine. What is adventurous is completely up to you, however you would find me leaning towards a grape variety I have never tried before or a blend of grapes I have never tried before. This way both the movie and your wine is exciting.
Comedy: I love comedies because they are just so easy to watch and you always end up in a good mood much like when you drink sparkling wine. A perfect night in would be me, a bottle of Champagne, a bag of potato chips or popcorn (both go really well with Champas) and Blades of Glory on TV. Awesome!
Crime: Lets go for a big, spicy, peppery Shiraz. Your taste buds will be calling the police when they find out how good the Barossa’s finest is and why you haven’t been drinking more of it.
Fantasy: Get really carried away in the fantasy world unfolding on your TV screen with a nice tawny Port. You too may soon start to believe that your kids toys in the toybox really do have lives of their own too.
Gangster: The Godfather and the grape king of Italy – Nebbiolo would be a match made in heaven. It’s intoxicating flavours will have you committing crimes.
Horror: Definitely you need a white for a horror otherwise if you are a jumper then you are going to have a horrible time trying to get the red wine stains out. I would team up the likes of Nightmare on Elm Street with a spicy dry Gewürztraminer.
Romance: It must be red and I believe a Pinot Noir would suit a sappy romance movie any day. Pinot has sexiness to it, when you drink it you fall in love and you really do start believing you may get your ‘happily ever after’.
Science Fiction: A Star Wars marathon must be complimented by a wine you can sip on slowly otherwise you will believe you too can hover like Yoda. I would go for something light and low in alcohol. Actually a Moscato (touch of vodka, Moscato, ice & a squeeze of lime) cocktail would be perfect to sip on whilst travelling between Naboo and Tattoine. Learn more about Moscato wine here.
On second thoughts i think i would need something chilled to cool me off a bit after watching Thor! Leave a comment and let’s see what your favourite wine and movie match is….
