2018 3drops Shiraz:
Tasted 26th April 2020
It had been far too long between drops, 3drops that is! I have been eagerly awaiting to crack into this 2018 Shiraz sample over the last couple of months (thank you Jo!) – I always get excited about the new releases from this Great Southern brand as I’m a big fan.
The 3drops vineyard is located just outside Mt Barker in WA. They not only grow grape vines but olive trees too, to make their tasty extra virgin olive oil.
We enjoyed this drop alongside a homemade curry – my favourite food match for Aussie Shiraz!
I found it a deep red-purple velvet shade in the glass. On the nose it comes across as fruity yet savoury to me – think spice, wood, mulberries and plums. While in the mouth it’s über elegant with berries and plum fruit laced with vanillin oak. It’s extremely well balanced and delicious.
This wine was sent to me as a sample, I was under no obligation to post about it.

Tasted 15th February 2020:
My parents were recently visiting from NZ so we thought we’d pull these two Great Southern (WA) Shiraz’s out to taste side by side. Who doesn’t love a mini vertical tasting right?
Firstly a big thanks to Jo from 3drops wine and olive oil who sent these over for us to try. It’s always interesting to try different vintages side by side.
The 3drops vineyard is southwest of Mt Barker and they grow Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Shiraz on the property. Alongside having Italian, Greek and Spanish varieties of olive trees throughout the vines to make extra virgin olive oil from.
Without further ado, here’s what we thought of the wines:
2016 3drops Shiraz
Cherry red colour in the glass with a big nose full of mushrooms, berries (boysenberry/blackberry) and smooth oak. Firstly it was the lovely long finish that stood out with this wine, a rib eye steak comes to mind as soon as you taste it. Think peppery with acidic berries and cherries and oak/leather/tobacco characteristics. My Dad said that it “reminds me of a cigar that sits on the back of your palate”. It went very well with our curry too!
2017 3drops Shiraz
A shiny bright purple red colour in the glass. The nose is both savoury and fruity with cherries, blackberries, raspberries and spice coming through. In the mouth it’s fruit forward and by goodness so easy to consume. We felt this is a lighter version of the 2016, more ready to consume now while the former should go back in the cellar for a bit longer.
