MyattsField 2014 ‘The Founder’ Chardonnay
It’s exciting pulling bottles out of the cellar. This bottle was part of Myattsfield Vineyards ‘Tete a Tete a Trois’ challenge in 2015 where the 3 winemakers each made a Chardonnay from the one block of grapes.
‘The Founder’ was made by Josh Davenport (who founded MyattsField Vineyards with his wife Rachel) and was fermented in stainless steel and spent 3 months on lees. Lees are the leftover yeast cells and by leaving a wine ‘on the lees’ it helps add texture and weight/body to the wine.
Here’s what I thought of it recently:
Yellow with a slight lime hint in the glass. Nectarine, bit of lanolin, and grapefruit on the nose. In the mouth it’s flavoursome with a nice long finish. Slightly grapey flavours with candied citrus and a sprinkling of white pepper. Very interesting!
