The 25 Swan Valley Sparkling Wines of Christmas 2014 – 11th December
Heafod Glen NV Blanc de Blanc
Heafod Glen Wines are rather tucked away in the Swan Valley. The cellar door sits right beside Chesters Restaurant (which is absolutely fabulous by the way!). My first introduction to the Heafod Glen Wines was at Viva Verdelho 2013 where I fell in love with their Verdelho. A couple of weeks later I had booked Mr. Spittoon and I in for dinner at Chesters Restaurant and OMG, between the food and wine it was such a heavenly night. So when winemaker, Liam Clarke contacted me to be a part of my Swan Valley Christmas countdown, I was super excited! The bottle Liam put forward was his Blanc de Blanc NV sparkling. The base wine for this bubbles was made back in 2010, and has been built on since, so there is some 4+ year old wine in this one. It is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes and currently retails for approximately $29 a bottle from the cellar door. And while you’re there I would definitely stay for a bite to eat at Chesters!
Tasting Note
On the eye it is a very fresh colour, think yellow with a tinge of green. On the nose it’s a blend of beautiful floral perfume and an apple & raisin dessert aroma which took me back to my childhood! In the mouth it is simply amazing, so fresh and zesty and incredibly easy to polish off. The lovely sparkling citrus notes make me think that this bubbles would go down super well on Boxing Day as it’s just goes down a treat, keep the party going to the 26th I say!
Christmas Special
I did hear a sneaky rumour that Liam was working on another sparkling soon to be released. This bubbles will be a Sparkling Rose made from Grenache, I am not sure when exactly this will be released but I absolutely can’t wait to try it!
About Heafod Glen Wines in the Swan Valley
The Chesters and Heafod Glen property has quite a history. The restaurant was once a fruit drying shed, which was later a stable quarters for a local riding school and the best bit is that you can still see quite a bit of that history around the place. From the Marri columns overhead to the restored stable doors and even all the tables and cabinet works have been handcrafted from the original timbers.
The cellar door is open Wednesday through to Sunday from 10am-5pm and they have the cutest wee doggie at the cellar door! Remember to say hi and give it a pat 🙂
