Conterno Giacomo – Cascina Francia – Barolo Italy, 2003
My whole 9 years of wine knowledge was knocked over for 6 last week when I tried the Giacomo Conterno ‘Cascina Francia’ 2003 Barolo. I was expecting a tannic beast that would be nowhere near drinkable for at least the next few years but on the contrary this was the most enticing elixir I have encountered for a Piedmontese tipple in a long time.
It had bright, fresh red fruits taking power on the palate with sweet notes streaming through of chocolate sprinkled with a touch of cinnamon. It drinks perfectly now though the weight of the alcohol could keep it prime for the next couple of years. It was definitely like no Barolo I have ever tasted though this is not to be taken as a bad thing, i would highly recommend this bottle to any form of wine drinker. Definitely one to add to the ‘Try Once in a Lifetime’ list.
