Begali Lorenzo 2016 Valpolicella Classico
I’m only days away from turning another year older so I thought I better live it up with wine, home-cooking and Netflix last night (and also tonight too).
The wine is a Valpolicella Classico 2016 from Begali Lorenzo in Veneto, Italy. I received this sample from the lovely Vino Bambino team. I couldn’t go past it as my blind tasting WSET level 3 exam included a Valpolicella – so it brings back memories for me!
It’s a DOC wine which is made from mostly Corvina and Rondinella grapes. I find Valpolicella an easy drinking red wine with a good amount of acid on it. This makes it great for matching with food!
I used a recipe from the Dish Magazine for grilled Korean glazed salmon with fresh mango and cucumber relish and what an awesome match it made for the wine. It made the flavours in the wine explode, in a good way. Because of the acidity in the wine, it goes nicely with fatty fish like salmon.
In the glass it’s a ruby red. On the nose it’s wonderfully fragrant with spiced cherries a hint of florals and a touch of ash come to mind. While in the mouth it’s supple and soft with those bright cherry notes and hints of spice coming through. A fun wine that teams well with the comedy section on Netflix.
All opinions are based on my own taste buds. Wine is subjective & always evolving, so make sure you drink what you enjoy!
