The Epic Italian Pizza Adventure through Rome & Napoli
Roma
1. Pizza Tonde Da Asporto
Corner of Via D.Fontana & Via M.Boiardo
Top tip: Never buy pizza from a ‘Kebab/Pizza’ shop – I know it was stupid to even attempt it, the only good thing was the tomato sauce was made from some nice fresh tomatoes. Absolute rip off however – 2 slices (more like pizza bread actually) for 6.50 Euros.
2. Papa Re Pizzeria
Via Della Lungaretta
Our first full-size pizzas in Italy and probably one of the post disappointing. The base was thin and extremely crispy – so trying to eat it with a knife and fork was mission impossible. Morgan had a Diavolo (spicy salami on a margarita), which was rather nice, however the garlic on my Marinara was repeating on me all night. 2 x pizza’s + 1 x 75cl of water = 11.50 Euro.
3. Pizza e Vizi
Roma Termini train station.
Probably our most ‘fast-food’ like pizza. It made me think of America to be honest – a large ¼ of a pizza loaded with cheese and a seriously thicker than normal Italian pizza base. 2 slices put us back 6.20 Euro however it kept us going all day. (Top middle photo).
Napoli
4. Pizzeria Giuliano
Corner of Calata Trinita Maggiore & Via Moteoliveto
We opted for 1 Marinara (tomato sauce, oregano & garlic) and a standard Margherita pizza, which cost us a total of 5.70 Euros. An absolute bargain!!! I have to admit this was one of the nicest bases I had throughout Italy. It was chewy yet silky. The cheese on the margarita wasn’t to rave about which brought the quality down but the Marinara was absolutely delicious and the best thing is even though it was nice and garlic-filled, I didn’t have an ever-lasting bad breath.
5. L’Aguitca Da Michele
Via Cesare Sersale 1, 80139, Naples, Italy; 081 5539204; damichele.net.
This is it, the type of pizza you come to Italy for! Otherwise known as the Neapolitan Pizza; the classic San Marzano tomatoes, Campania’s famous buffalo mozzarella cheese, a touch of basil and a swirl of extra virgin olive oil. I loved Da Michele, we only had to wait 10 minutes to get a seat and the menu consisted of only two choices; double cheese or normal. Of course I had to go for the doppio I can’t even explain how good this pizza was, the dough was thin but a mouthful of chewy gooeyness at the same time with an avalanche of tomato and cheese drowning the taste buds. The only downside was that it was huge, and I am still in pain from stuffing myself! 2 x doppio mozzarella + 1 x 75cl of water = 14 Euro (including a 2 Euro tip).
6. Pizzeria Eduardo
247 Corso Vittorio Emanuele
Delicious but the base was seriously lacking the yummness of the previous too and seemed to be more bready than anything else. However the shinning star was the copious amounts of fresh basil on the top of our marinara that just made it taste superb! 1 x Marinara and a bottle of water = 5 Euro.
7. Fratelli L Bufala
Via Medina 18
Gorgeous little place however I have to say my experience was pretty much dictated by the stroppy waiters. However trying to put that aside our pizza was very tasty – we opted for something different this time; the Irpina – cream, mushrooms, mozzarella & ham. Nice, but not worth the cash. 1 x Irpina, 1 x bottle of water and a coverage charge of 1.50 Euro per person set us back 10.30 Euros.
