Top Quality Wines at Rickety Gate in the Great Southern
For me, Rickety Gate is a standout winery in the Great Southern wine region. They produce some utterly remarkable wine and probably some of my favourites from the region.
After being told we definitely need to stop by on our recent trip to Denmark, it was high on the to do list and thank goodness it was because I am sure this will be one of my top recommendations for anyone visiting the region.
The cellar door & Kirby’s…
As you drive up the driveway you pass the ‘rickety gate’ which is the symbol of the winery. The cellar door sits alongside the acclaimed Kirby’s at Rickety Gate restaurant which I must say, I totally regret not booking in for a meal there while we were down. Frederick Kirby and his wife Jacqueline run the restaurant alongside cooking classes and catering for private dining. I have heard only amazing things about this little spot and the aromas coming out of the kitchen while I was there were incredible!
I can imagine that they’d do the Rickety Gate Wines pure justice with their food matches. Top of the list for our next Great Southern visit for sure and for the meantime I’ll live through all their foodie pics on their Facebook page.
I love good customer service and Tammi on the cellar door at Rickety Gate delivered! She was super knowledgable on all things to do with wine and even opened a couple of special bottles just for us to taste. I love it when well-educated wine people can speak about wine without snobbery and use normal terms. Even Mr. Spittoon was captivated!
The wines…
Rickety Gate has a huge range of wines to choose from, so it’s definitely one of those great places to take even the pickiest of wine drinkers as you’ll be sure to find something for everyone. They have their main range – approachable, cost-effective and tasty as well as a reserve range which were AMAZING!
To be honest with you, I fell in love with many of the wines however we had a budget to stick to so we decided to purchase our favourite 3 to bring back to Perth. All 3 have already been consumed, they really didn’t last long now did they! So here were our favourites:
Rickety Gate 2010 Reserve Sauvignon Blanc (Fume Blanc) $38
Uhh a fume SB is my kind of happiness in a bottle and this lovely tipple from Rickety Gate in Denmark hits the nail on the head. Lovely crisp yellow with a green tinge on the eye. Aromas of stewed fruit pie, fresh micro herbs, vanilla and citrus. On the palate it’s just so darn delectable it has you weak at the taste buds. Gorgeous flavours of a tropical and orchard fruit salad garnished with pretty little edible flavours and subtle herbs. Such an interesting wine and one which was actually decanted at the cellar door prior to serving, this baby turns into something extraordinary once decanted – I love it!
Rickety Gate 2009 Reserve Semillon Sauvignon Blanc (Barrel Fermented) $40
This barrel fermented SSB was decanted at the cellar door so naturally I had to do the same at home. Fairly deep vibrant yellow on the eye with slight tangerine hints. Creamy, voluptuous and floral on the nose. In the mouth that creaminess flows through with flavours of passionfruit, lime and white pepper. Gorgeous tipple!
Rickety Gate 2007 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon $70
Super deep brick-red colour on the eye. Big intense nose on it (totally the Pinocchio of wine noses!) with aromas of dark black fruits, leather, dark chocolate coated coffee beans and creme de cassis. This is the Samantha Jones (Sex & The City) of wines. It’s the powerful sexy business woman of vino. So juicy and vibrant on the palate with a super seductive and full on character. Watch out, you’ll get hooked!
