Old Mates 2019 Chenin Blanc – South Africa
I love Chenin Blanc and I have Perth’s Swan Valley to thank for that.
This one here is not from the Swan Valley, or even from Australia. It’s in fact from Stellenbosch in South Africa however it’s actually made by Aussie winemaker!
Introducing Old Mates 2019 Chenin Blanc which Good Pair Days imports and has kindly sent me a sample of to taste (thank you!!).
Mick met Jeanine in 2007 during harvest in Sonoma (California). After winemaking around the world the Aussie – South African couple decided to put roots down in SA and now make wines under their Craven label in Stellenbosch.
Out of the SA wines we’ve tried over the recent months, this would have to be a favourite.
In the glass it’s a lemon shade with a vibrant nose of sweet fruits, citrus rind herbs + florals. It l definitely is a ‘bolt of energy’ as Good Pair Days puts it. In the mouth it nearly has an oily texture, very consumable! There’s a touch of marzipan, some fresh apricots, almond nuttiness and thirst quenching grapefruit acidity. More please!
This wine was sent to me as a sample, I was under no obligation to post about it.
All opinions are based on my own taste buds. Wine is subjective & always evolving, so make sure you drink what you enjoy!
