Lunch at Mash Brewing – Swan Valley, Perth
I am very partial to the Mash “West Coast” wheat beer. However it’s never tempted me to have a meal. Recently a friend invited me to lunch at the craft brewery as it’s one of her and her husbands favourite spots in the Valley for a meal, so how could I say no 🙂
Mash Brewing is right beside the Swan Valley Oasis Resort on West Swan Road, home to the famed Supa Golf and as I found out recently, they also have a mini golf course. Being a lover of mini putt I am glad to have one close by and I’ll definitely be checking it out soon. Here’s hoping they have wine stops around the course!
Mash is a unique little venue with brewery equipment on view, tall ceilings, long gorgeous wooden bar tables and painted pin-up girls on the wall. In my opinion it does need a little TLC with the front door sign having lost a few letters and looking a little worn out.
The restaurant area has a children’s area equipped with TVs and toys (kids eat for free on Fridays at Mash!). There is indoor seating and outdoor seating on the verandah. It’s a rather casual eating experience with menus and plastic pots with serviettes, knives and forks at your tables.
The drinks menu has a good selection of their handcrafted beer (sadly they do not offer a tasting platter which I find a little weird – they really should!), the wheat and Freo Doctor being favourites and a nice selection of local Swan Valley wines by the glass. I went for a glass of the Sittella Verdelho on this particular day, at $8 a glass you really can’t go wrong. I also have been told from good sources that they do some pretty tasty snakebites (beer, cider and raspberry cordial).
My friend highly recommended the lamb shank which we were both going to go for however UNFORTUNATELY on this particular day, they were all out. Thankfully there were plenty of other choices on the menu to avoid our disappointment.
I decided to go for the ‘Pie of the Day – beef and mushroom braised using Mash’s “Rye the Hop Not?”. Which was good, however for $25 I would have preferred a full pastry pie (not just the top) and more of a salad than just carrot and beetroot. The chips were cooked to perfection however and the steak and mushroom mixture was good. The gravy in the pie was great for dipping the chips in!
My friends ‘beef fillet wrapped in pancetta with roast root vegetables, creamy garlic mash topped with braised beef cheek and red wine jus’ for $40 looked divine, and she confirmed it was lovely – I will definitely be going back to try that one and the lamb shank! It’s the type of place in the Swan Valley where you can turn up in jandals (thongs/flip flops), shorts and a singlet and not feel out-of-place or under dressed.
