We all love to drink wine, especially over the holiday season however sometimes it’s tricky to justify the spend when you’re meant to be saving or perhaps have already bought more wine than you really should of lately. So what happens if I tell you that this Christmas you can buy wine (plus a wide range of gifts) and the profits will go to supporting a multitude of social causes from disability, environment, homelessness, refugee, fair trade, education, Indigenous, youth, and other disadvantaged sectors? It sounds like a pretty good reason to go shopping and buy wine if you ask me!
Australia Post and Social Traders have teamed up to offer us an online marketplace called Good Spender. The site has a ton of awesome gift ideas from clothes to homewares, restaurant vouchers and of course wine!
“A social enterprise is a business that makes most of their income from trade, not donations, and uses their profits to work towards a social mission. So basically they’re using their profits to do something good for the community.” – David Brookes, Managing Director of Social Traders
This online shopping haven for the socially aware launched last year and in 2015 the number of social enterprises represented on the site has doubled which means there is a huge range of products to indulge in.
Make a difference with Goodwill Wines
Goodwill Wines is part of the Good Spender initiative. Goodwill offers boutique wines from around Australia and pass a minimum of 50% of the profit from every sale to a charity of your choice. You can read more about the heart-warming story of David Laity the man behind Goodwill Wines here.
Within the Goodwill Wines range available through Good Spender you can purchase 6 and 12 packs of:
- Goodwill Red – Coonawarra Shiraz 2010
- Goodwill White – Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2012
- Goodwill Bubbles – Otway Sparking Pinot Noir Chardonnay 2008
I was lucky enough to try the Red & White last year, you can read my tasting notes here. And this year Good Spender kindly sent me some of the sparkling wine to try and I really couldn’t think of a better vino to crack into this December. Or in fact any time of the year!
Shipping is a mere $12 for 6-packs and $17 for 12-packs. Unfortunately the Goodwill range cannot be shipping to WA, Tasmania or Northern Territory however the wines can be sent to most other destinations in Australia.
Mixed packs of the red and white can also be ordered for $90 for a half case and $180 for a full case so you can get the best of both worlds and keep both the red wine and white wine drinkers happy this Xmas.
Goodwill Sparkling Wine Tasting Note
A 6-pack of this socially conscious bubbles sells for $150, or $300 for a 12 pack. What I love about this bubbles from the first pour is the gold-tinsel colour it is in the glass with teeny tiny bubbles that look a bit like fairy lights. It truly is a looker! On the nose I picked up whiffs of baked fruit pies with a touch of buttered popcorn and a hint of refreshing citrus to give it that zip of freshness. It’s full of flavour on the palate with an almost cream-like texture and a mighty long finish that seems to go on forever. Well balanced and it most definitely fills you with festive cheer!
