Accommodation in Denmark, WA – Celestine Retreat Spa Chalets

I don’t know about you, but accommodation can make or break a holiday in my opinion. There was the bed bug incident in Florence, the sweltering heat and no aircon in Mallorca and then there was the magnificent infinity edge pool overlooking the beach in our own villa in Oman and the über cool make shift prison cell hostel in Stockholm. I’m pretty sure I can quite clearly remember every accommodation option I’ve stayed in whilst on holiday. It’s typically one of the first things you book and will no doubt leave a lasting impression if you’re anything like me.

As you know recently I planned a trip to Denmark. Having not been further than Margaret River yet, I had no idea where to even start looking so I put a few feelers out on social media (a big thanks to everyone who got back to me!). And I also perused the likes of Trip Advisor and the Denmark Tourism website. After much deliberation we ended up deciding on Celestine Retreat who had one chalet left, it was meant to be!
I guess with all the accommodation options, there is still the fact that it may not live up to how it’s portrayed online. I’ve been to Thailand enough times to know that it’s not that hard to Photoshop a few pictures and generate some glowing reviews.

Celestine Retreat falls into this category. Yet it’s the opposite way around, I don’t think the website gives the actual place enough credit! Don’t get me wrong, it looks lovely online, hence why we choose it but when we showed up, it’s safe to say my expectations were met and exceeded.

When I book accommodation I either go the route of going for something on the cheaper scale because we won’t be spending much time there or we spend that little bit more because we know that we will want to hang out a bit. We were definitely opting for the latter on this trip. I needed to relax!

Our ‘Enchant’ chalet was $239 a night. It’s a 2-bedroom one bathroom so it would be more than suitable for a small family or a lucky couple like us!

The chalets at Celestine are setup so you can soak up as much of the view as possible with floor to ceiling windows and sliding doors. It was lovely to open all the doors and windows (which had mesh coverings to ward off the bugs) in the evening. The rolling hills, gorgeous sunsets and deck chairs will have you relaxed in no time. Plus what I really loved was that seeing as you have your own kitchen you can enjoy a bottle (or 3) of wine, make up a cheese board and your evening is set! Definitely extra points for having both wine glasses and Champagne flutes too!
The other bonus of opting for self-catered accommodation in Denmark is that you can head to the local IGA, stock up on goodies and then cook half of your meals at the chalet. As much as I enjoy dining out, it is nice to balance the going out with home cooking. Plus I couldn’t think of a better breakfast spot, I loved getting up in the morning, cooking a lovely breakfast and drinking tea while looking out at that gorgeous view, a wonderful way to start the day! Plus Celestine have their own veggie patch which guests are encouraged to pick their own produce from.
There was plenty of cell reception in the area too which was great as seeing it was my birthday weekend, I wanted to Skype and catch up with family. Despite feeling completely away from the city in the middle of the country, we still had all the amenities we needed.

And last but not least, the spa bath! They advertise themselves as offering ‘luxury spa chalets’ and they deliver! We’d pop a bottle of bubbles, run the spa and enjoy. Plenty of bubble bath to put in too (not those teeny tiny little hotel bottle amounts but one big bottle which created a decent amount of bubbly goodness to soak in).

Plus the bed was super comfy, it was so lovely waking up to the birds chirping instead of noisy cars and traffic! If you are a keen bird watcher/photographer then you’ll have a ball at Celestine. We saw so many kinds of gorgeous birds while sitting out on our deck and Mr. Spittoon even trekked across the property to get snaps of some.

The managers of Celestine, Jody and Jeff Ovenden are super friendly and lovely. They’re more than happy to answer any questions or queries you may have and set you up with maps and brochures when you arrive too. A couple of times we raided the communal DVD collection for our late-night movie watching pleasure at the reception which was great.

Celestine Retreat is only 3kms out of Denmark town and the brilliant news is that there is a restaurant/brewery and winery within walking distance! Yep that’s right, Castelli Estate is just up the road and the Southern End Restaurant is a hop, skip and jump. As they say, location, location, location!

So if you’re looking for accommodation in or around Denmark, I would highly suggest Celestine. The wineries are highly accessible from this spot and it’s the perfect location to enjoy a bottle of vino after a hard day of wine tasting in the Great Southern!
