Recently one of my 2014 Wine Tasting Notes caused so much commotion across my social media channels that I thought I had better get my wine drinking butt into gear and do up a proper blog post for it so that all you lovely people can learn about and drink Smurf Wine too!!
Why am I calling it Smurf Wine? Well quite simply its blue! It’s a sparkling wine that is a super pretty cyan blue colour.
Blanc de Bleu Cuvée Mousseux sparkling wine challenges the senses and opens your imagination to the possibilities of the wonderful world of wine. This baby blue wine also won silver honors in the 2012 BevStar Awards by the way!
If you wondering what the heck all that gibberish on the label means, well it’s actually French and ‘Blanc de Bleu’ means ‘white of blue’ and ‘cuvée mousseux’ literally means ‘sparkling cuvee’.
Premium Vintages Cellars are the company behind these unique bottle of bubbles and after many years of research and talking to hundreds of wineries they came up with this beautiful product which is the worlds first blue sparkling wine. I have to admit, it’s a pretty yet rather sexy bottle at the same time.
What is it made from?
This blue sparkling wine is made with 100% Chardonnay grapes from California’s Mendocino County wine region with a hint of blueberry extract added to the press to create the colour and impart some unique characteristics in the wine.
The grapes are picked at low sugar levels to ensure the alcohol content is not too high. It sits at 11% which is pretty standard really and is a Brut style. You can read my Blanc de Bleu tasting note here.
Where can I buy it?
Unfortunately for us WA locals we have to order Blanc de Bleu from over East (totally envious of you East-siders right now!). I now wish I had ordered a few more bottles the first time round as it is such a statement wine that really gets people talking. A bottle retails for $45 and if you’re interested in finding some, check out the shops who do stock it here, there are over 60 stores in NSW, VIC, QLD & SA who stock it according to the importer, Rappox (who are the one and only supplier of Blanc de Bleu in Australia).
If you’re still struggling to track some down, send the Blanc de Bleu team an email or give them a call and they’ll be happy to help you out! Check out the website here or email them directly on: firstname.lastname@example.org
The possibilities of how fantastic this wine would be for a baby shower, a wedding, or even just an awesome party are endless. As they say, put ‘something blue in your magical moments’…
And just remember, a sparkling wine cannot be called a Champagne if it is not from the Champagne wine region in France (don’t let Google fool you!).
