Olive Farm Wines 2007 ‘Olivine’ Brut (Madeleine)This Olive Farm Wines (OFW) bubbles is made from the fairly rare and unique Madeleine grape variety which really sets this sparkling wine apart. Originally from the Loire Valley in France the Madeleine variety is known for being particular dry and crisp with fantastic acidity that compliments oyster and crab down to a tee. Sounds like a good plan for Christmas lunch don’t you think?
The Madeleine grape has been a part of the Yurisich family for a very long time and has a longstanding, loyal fan base at OFW. Olivine sells for $33 at the OFW cellar door and comes in quite a stumpy, heavy bottle with a crown cap.
OFW was actually the very first winery in Western Australia to make a Brut Champagne by the traditional Methode Champenoise method used in Champagne, France. Vince Yurisich made the first Sparkling Wine by Methode Champenoise method in 1965, he corked it by hand and even dipped the top in beeswax.
Tasting Note
A lovely golden-yellow colour on the eye, which I suspect is due to its age. On the nose I picked up rather musky aromas followed by mango, toasted bread, floral notes and sea spray. While on the palate it has a creamy divine mousse with plentiful citrus flavours and a touch of peach. Very pleasant and def my pick to match the seafood on Xmas day.

About OFW
I have to admit, I love visiting OFW! It’s such a fantastic way to spend a morning or afternoon. The cellar door is simply beautiful, I love how you can peer into the winery and the staff (especially Gemma) are truly lovely. Not to mention they have such a huge wine list of different styles that you’re bound to find something for everyone or at least tick off trying a few new grape varieties.
Right beside the cellar door is The Cheese Barrel, which puts together tasty cheese board with matching OFW wine flights as well as selling takeaway cheese and doing cheese classes. For wine and cheese lovers, you’ll be in heaven!
As you may know, OFW is the oldest established winery in Western Australia, dating back to 1829. Originally founded by Thomas Waters who started off by planting olive trees (hence the name), he later planted vines and in 1933 the Yurisich family who emigrated from Yugoslavia took over ownership. The winery is still in the family, with 4th generation winemaker, Anthony Yurisich now at the reins.
