Killerby Wines & Cheeky Monkey Brewery Margaret River
Yes you read that right ‘cellar store’ not ‘cellar door’. Killerby Wines definitely deserves to stand out from the crowd when you see their most beautiful cellar store in Margaret River. Team that up with lunch in the sunshine and perhaps a beer and cider tasting or two next door and you have a great afternoon.
It was our first day in Margaret River showing my Kiwi folks around the region they’d been keen to explore for so long. We had driven down that morning from Perth, making a few winery stops on the way like Whicher Ridge in the Geographe and by 2pm we were STARVING!
After checking in to our Air BnB apartment in town we were wondering where to go for lunch. The boys naturally were voting for a brewery and us girls a laid back winery. And we managed to satisfy everyone!
Killerby Wines and Cheeky Monkey Brewery literally sit side-by-side on Caves Road. As they’re adjoining it means you can have the best of both worlds (plus there’s a playground and plenty of space for the kiddies to run around so it’s good for the whole family really!).
The food
We were absolutely starving so we quickly took up a pose outside in the sun and ordered some bites to eat up at the counter. My favourite had to be the flavour on the chicken wings, so delectable but totally messy, I wish they’d cut them up into more manageable pieces however, nibbles would have been a bit better for messy eaters like myself. Also the smoky jalapeno aioli with the shoestring fries was so good! I was literally licking the little plastic container it came in.
The wine
While we were waiting for our food I had to have a sneaky peek into Killerby’s cellar store and it’s simply beautiful! The interior design (done by Roxby Design) was just amazing and the cellar store is also home to the longest tasting bench in Australia! The bench has a meat and cheese larder built into it too. I swear you could hang out on the stools at the tasting bench all day. I literally wanted to buy everything! From wine to cheese and chocolate to pasta sauce. It truly is a food & wine lovers delight.
And how were the wines? Delectable! I enjoyed a glass of Sauv Blanc with my lunch which was absolutely thirst quenching on such a summery day. Killerby have released a few new wines over the last few months which I’ve been lucky enough to try. Check them out below:
Killerby 2013 Chardonnay
This 2013 Chardonnay is a new vintage release from the team at Killerby Wines in the Margaret River. It retails at approximately $30. Pale yellow on the eye with aromas of citrus, freshly whipped cream and peaches. Nice oomphy oaky palate, with a super refreshingly fresh finish. Flavours of kiwi fruit, nuts and lemon & lime kept me going back for more. A well-balanced Margs Chardy that’ll be interesting to taste over the coming years to see how it develops
Killerby 2015 Sauvignon Blanc
This 2015 new release is an oaked style Sauvignon Blanc from the team at Killerby Wines in the Margaret River. It retails for approximately $26 and is described as a ‘food lovers wine’ by the producer. Silver colour with a yellow-green tinge on the eye. Tropical aromas of pineapple & passionfruit with whiffs of white blossoms, grass and refreshing spiced citrus. On the palate it’s fresh and full of further notes of passionfruit & melon with lovely balanced citrus flavours and a tease of vanilla bean. A thoroughly enjoyable wine after a day full of cleaning the house! I had it’s on its lonesome and it went down a treat.
Killerby 2013 Shiraz
This 2013 Shiraz from Killerby is a little alcohol bomb at an alcohol level of 14.5%. Newly released you can purchase it for approximately $32. A strong red colour on the eye with hints of purple and big aromas of peppered steak, leather, plums and a sort of cooling menthol nature. On the palate it’s juicy with upfront berry fruit sweetness while the finish is earthy and tannic. Oak and plum flavours intertwine with a warming alcohol sensation that leaves you with rosy cheeks and a ‘please give me more’ grin.
Killerby 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon
This Margaret River cab is a black cherry/deep garnet colour on the eye. On the nose there’s plentiful whiffs of blackberry, tobacco/cigar smoke, old saddle leather, 2-day old cut grass and anise wheels. On the palate those blackberry flavours shine through, alongside boysenberry flavours with a touch of white pepper and liquorice. Lovely long lingering tannins that make you crave a good cut of beef. RRP $32

That’s such a shame Veronica – hopefully this was just a once off as I know when we visited, we had a great time and no issues at all! Worthy of a second chance in my opinion!
Worst winery I’ve ever been to!! The woman behind the counter at Killerby wines was the rudest and most disinterested person I have ever encountered at any wi wry anywhere in Australia. So disappointed
By comparison the young man at the brewery was very pleasant
Definitely would not recommend stopping there
