The 25 Swan Valley Sparkling Wines of Christmas 2014 – 15th December
Entopia 2011 Sparkling Rose
I love visiting Entopia in the Swan Valley, it has such a cute cellar door that overlooks the vineyard and the lovely couple who own and run the property make you feel right at home. Plus how can you not like the slogan ‘The Thinking Person’s Winery’, I told you wine is educational, didn’t I!
I actually came across this rose bubbles earlier in the year on a Top Gun Tour and it is such a hidden gem. For $25 at the cellar door, it is a bargain. This rose sparkling is made from 100% free-run Cabernet grapes and is made in the traditional French Champagne method. The well-know sparkling winemaker, Frazer Woods in the Margaret River actually makes this rose for Entopia using their estate-grown grapes.
The grapes are all hand-picked and the wine spends over 12 months aging in the bottle on yeast lees prior to being disgorged. It’s a great match for seafood and light meats, which means it would be absolutely perfect on your Christmas lunch table!
Tasting Note
This sparkling screams Christmas right from its bright cherry red-pink colour on the eye to its bursting bubbles. The nose is very interesting on this one, I found it quite vegetal with notes of capsicum, flint, a touch of sugar snap peas and strawberry jam on slightly burnt toast. However on the palate those lovely fruit flavours flow through with flavours of red berries, watermelon and cherry ripe! It’s crisp, refreshing and I could imagine sipping on this while listening to Christmas carols on the 24th of Christmas and wrapping the last of the presents.
About Entopia in the Swan Valley
Entopia is owned and run by Brian and Heather Hunt who purchased the property in 1998. The property didn’t have vines on when they originally purchased it, however in 2000 they decided to plant around 1800 Shiraz vines. In the following years they began planting Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Verdelho too.
The property is about 4 hectares and sits on the shores of the Swan River. Most of the vineyard work is done by Brian and Heather with some contractors brought in for various tasks too.
The cellar door is open Saturday & Sundays only from 11am-4pm, it’s set in a pavilion overlooking the vines – such a stunning spot!
