The Dunsborough YHA Beachouse Hostel, Western Australia

I too was afraid of hostels before I set out on my epic European adventure. Losing your hostel virginity can be a scary thing with images of unclean, scruffy looters sleeping in the bed above you. I would of rather opted for a budget hotel over a hostel until I found out from trusty sources that they actually aren’t like the Hostel movies.

When I walked into the YHA Beachouse in Dunsborough last weekend I was again flabbergasted at the quality you can get at a hostel. Honestly, how can you beat a place right on the beach? Okay so you have to share a common bathroom, but it’s crystal clear Geographe Bay on your doorstep. Simply put, the pros outweigh the cons.

Everything from the surfboard shack on the beach to the BBQ tables on the patio scream Aussie relaxation. The best thing about my stay was that on Saturday evenings there is a mighty BBQ cook up. For AU$12 you can feast on steak, sausages, burgers, chicken, lamb chops, salads, rolls and a glass of wine! It is brilliant and a great chance to meet some fellow travelers in such an awesome spot.

If you wish to cook for yourself, there is a well-equipped kitchen and also a common room with a pool table to chill out in till the early hours. The hostel is also happy to lend out snorkeling equipment, fish gear and boogie boards.

My boyfriend and I always opt for a private room when staying in hostels as we like our privacy. We initially booked for a private bunkroom however when we showed up they had a cancellation so we were upgraded to a double bed room whichwas just bliss. The room was basic, though more importantly the bed was comfy and the room was ultra clean. What more do you need?

Dunsborough is a great location for exploring the Margaret River as it sits right on the northern gateway for the region. There are wineries galore as well as microbreweries, chocolate & cheese factories and plenty of activities like fishing, whale watching, diving, surfing and mountain biking.

The hostel offers a superb service of a courtesy shuttle for getting around too. So if you are worried about how you are going to get out and about, don’t worry about it. They have it covered!

For one night we paid AU$76 however if we had a YHA membership it would have been only AU$68 for a 2-bed private room. If you intend on staying for a decent amount of time, make sure you get in touch with Andy from the hostel who can perhaps swing you a sweet deal.
