Lucky Chan’s Laundromat & Noodlebar + The Wine List

I reckon Quentin Tarantino would be rather impressed with the Lucky Chan’s wine list in Northbridge. Why am I bringing Quentin into this you ask? Well it’s not hard to see that Lucky Chan’s, Perth’s first crowd-funded restaurant, has a strong Kill Bill theme to the skinny, tall venue which spans over 3 levels.

Prior to the restaurant opening I was invited along to check out the digs and I must say the place has come a long way! Check out my first glimpse of Lucky Chan’s here. During the crowd-funding stage, Mr. Spittoon and I decided to pledge to help getting the exciting venue on the map. In exchange for our pledge we got to wine and dine once the Northbridge restaurant opened its doors.

So a little while ago, we decided to train into town and check out the quirky, and very tasty laundromat owned by Mr. Chan. I’ve never wanted to spend so long in a laundry, if only my one at home was that much fun.

The Wine & Drinks

As part of our pledge, we were able to have a cocktail each and could choose either a glass of wine or beer. I opted for the Falling Water cocktail which consisted of feijoa vodka, aloe vera, fresh mint, citrus and fizz – it was nice. Mr. Spittoon went for the exotic Lychee Mojito Bubble Tea – Havana rum, lychees, fresh mint, fruit pearls and naturally served just like a bubble tea.

The cocktails were good, but it was the wine list that caught my attention and no doubt on my next visit I’ll skip the cocktails and dig straight into the wine as Lucky Chan’s know how to put a good wine list together!

The house wine, which came as part of our package was the Lucky Chan’s Kyoho White by Bella Ridge in the Swan Valley (typically $9.50 by the glass or $47 by the bottle). Kyoho is a Japanese grape which in this instance produced a semi-sweet style wine that is absolutely perfect with the food on offer at Lucky Chan’s – particularly if you like a chilli-fuelled bowl of ramen like myself!

From prosecco to Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Riesling, Pinto Gris, Chenin Blanc, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Nebbiolo – it is such an interesting list. It may be small but it’s full of absolute gems. I really applaud Lucky Chan’s as even if the food was crap (which it isn’t by the way!) I’d still want to keep going back, just for the wine list!

Of course there’s also plenty of spirits, beers and ciders on the list. We ended our visit with a beer and whisky at the roof top bar over looking Northbridge which was a nice end to the meal.

The Food

Ramen noodles are the pride and joy of Lucky Chan’s. And being a chilli lover, I definitely loved being able to choose my hotness level on a scale from 1-20. Both Mr. Spittoon and I went for 15/20 and between you and me, it was a lovely balance with my glass of Kyoho!

There are various ramen bowls to choose from start at $14.90 and believe me they are a lot more filling than they look! I went for Chef’s Choice – Danny Ramen which had Szechuan spicy pork mince, buttered corn, spring onion + bean sprouts. Super duper tasty and Mr. Spittoon seemed pretty smitten with his Shio salty corned beef ramen bowl (see pics below).

We didn’t have any starters but I do hear the dumplings and bao are pretty tasty. Looks like I’ll have to go back!

However part of the package was a dessert each and we both couldn’t look past the ‘black chocolate cake, aerated chocolate mayo & raspberry sorbet’ – it was as good as it looks!

Ambience

It’s safe to say whoever designed this Japanese inspired eating and drinking hole is a huge Kill Bill fan. I absolutely loved everything to do with the interior design, everything had been well thought out and there was literally something cool and quirky to look at in every nook and cranny. It does get a bit squished if the place is full, however I think that adds to the overall ambiance and makes you think that you really could be in Asia. I loved the mah-jong tiled bar and looking into the little room where ramen was being made on the second level of the venue.

I would most definitely go back to Lucky Chan’s if I was in the neighbourhood and I would highly recommend working your way through the wine list at some point!
