Sunset Wine 2014 – Food & Wine Festival in Perth

GENIUS!! A wine festival at the beach, pure genius! Last weekend I attended Perth’s newest wine event – Sunset Wine at Scarborough Beach and it was bloody fantastic. Busy but great.
The festival ran from 3-7:30pm on both the Saturday and Sunday. The later timing meant the weather was more bearable and even people with fair skin like myself were safe from the suns rays. I love the beach but hardly ever go and I’m sure that’s because there are no wineries by the beach! So when I heard about Sunset Wine I knew it had to be on my 2014 drinking agenda.
Sunset Wine comes to you from the same organisers as UnWined Western Australia – WA’s Boutique Wine and Food Show and the Geographe Crush Food & Wine Festival. Sunset Wine is a lot smaller and intimate and I think a lot more laid back. As soon as I walked in I just wanted to grab a glass, a bite to eat and chill out on the cushion covered wooden pallets listening to the lovely live music. With glasses of wine selling from $6, who wouldn’t!!
Tickets were $25 at the gate or $21 pre-puchased. The ticket gave you entry, a tasting glass to take home and obviously access to free wine tastings, live music and special discounts on wine and food. I would love to see the wine glasses branded next year, I have a cupboard full of tasting glasses all with their own little story (festival/winery name) on – it’s such a great little souvenir to take home.
I’m thankful we got there on the dot at 3pm on the Saturday as by 4:30pm it was packed! Therefore we had enough time to zip round the wine stalls for a taste and then time to claim our spot before the masses of wine drinkers took over.
Some of my favourite wines at the show were the Nannup Chardonnay, Pemberley Sauvignon Blanc, Silkwood’s Little Bitch Sparkling, Talisman 2013 & 2008 Rieslings and I’ve always been a sucker for the Howling Wolves Cabernato Moijito (selling for $10 a pop – however it’s a huge cup which = great value!).
Foodie treats at the show were also plentiful. Mr Spittoon and I devoured an Apple Cider Pork Belly pizza from Two Queens Woodfired Street Food for a reasonable $15 (lovely thin base with tasty toppings) and some Jumplings Dumplings ($10 for a bowl full of 5 dumplings, salad and chilli & mayo!) which went well with the Talisman Riesling.
The live music consisted of a young band playing really great laid back beachy cover songs such as Jack Johnson which really suited the atmosphere. The festival was on the grassy area before the beach however they had set up a deck type area were you could go to sip your vino while looking out to the ocean and enjoying the sunset…. Bliss!
All up I had a great time! It was hella busy which is hopefully a good sign that there’ll be a Sunset Wine 2015! For more information on the event & other wine & food events in Perth please check out the CMS Events website here.
