Ferngrove 2017 King Malbec – Frankland River
Oh boy did I have fun diving into Naomi’s cellar 😉 I have consumed many Ferngrove wines, and their King Malbec from their Orchid range is pretty special. As you can see from the picture, this 2017 vintage also picked up a gold medal.
Naomi bought it at Wine Show By the Bay – which is a fantastic event if you haven’t been to one before.
Ferngrove are based in WA’s Great Southern wine region, in Frankland River. The name comes from the road the winery and vineyard are on – it is one of the world’s most isolated wine estates.
For me, Malbec is definitely a cheese wine, from blue cheese, to ooey gooey melted cheese. It just works so well. Naturally it’s also great with a nice big juicy steak too.
So what did we think of this big, burly red? Here are my notes:
In the glass it’s a deep, dark red-black shade. While on the nose it made me think of black plums, pencil shavings and a bit of tomato leaf. In the mouth it’s juicy and fruity with a silky smooth texture – think flavours of blackcurrant with a nice long clean finish.
All opinions are based on my own taste buds. Wine is subjective & always evolving, so make sure you drink what you enjoy.
