I love BYO restaurants! I hate to say it but half the time I reckon I can pick out a much better match for my food than being restricted to what’s on a wine menu. Plus BYO spots also mean that technically I’m saving money because I’m purchasing wine from a bottle shop or cellar door instead of paying for a bottle of wine which has been marked up in price for restaurant sales (here’s a list of more BYO restaurants in Perth). So it was awesome to hear that Crust Pizza Bar in Mt Lawley have recently received their license to be a fully fledged Perth BYO spot. What’s even better is that they’re offering free corkage for all wine and beer opened on the premise. Score!
I was so excited to be invited along to the launch night a couple of weeks ago by Crust & the Perth Champagne Club. Pizza is probably my most favourite meal and when it’s teamed up with delicious Champagne, well life doesn’t really get any better. I took along my good friend Haley from Hungry Husband & Wine-ing Wife who is a bit of a pizza and champas fiend just like me!
Nick from the Perth Champagne Club was pouring Champagne Janisson & Fils Brut (tasting note below),Rob Dolan Wines True Colours Pinot Noir as well as Veuve Moisans Rose bubbles to go with the sweet delights at the end of the night.
Pale yellow on the eye with a fast streaming milky-way of bubbles. Aromas of baked apples, fresh wholemeal breads and candied citrus fruit. On the palate its crisp, fresh and my oh my so refreshing. Elegant, delicious and I’d definitely drink it again.
As the DJ played funky tunes in the background and we sipped on Champagne, we enjoyed dining on:
- Starters: Herb & Garlic Squares, Olive & Feta Squares and Herb Bread with Hummus & Olives
- Pizzas: c. 1889 Margherita, Vegetarian Supreme,Florentine Ricotta, Peri Peri Chicken, Pulled Pork & Slaw, Med Lamb, Crust Supreme, Szechuan Chilli Prawn, Prosciutto and Gluten & Dairy Free Pesto Chicken Club
- Dessert: Black Forest Crumble, Elvis Crumble & Chocolate Mousse
My favourites had to be the Pulled Pork & Slaw and the 1889 Margherita plus that Black Forest Crumble is absolutely fantastic with the rose bubbles!
I would highly recommend popping along to Crust for a boozy meal at some point, below I have put together a quick pizza and wine matching guide based on what I like and think would go well with certain Crust pizzas 🙂

- No fail match for all pizzas = Champagne
- Pulled Pork & Slaw = Sparkling Rose or Zinfandel
- White Prosciutto = Chardonnay or Pinot Noir
- Margherita = Grenache for a red or dry Rose
- Hawaiian = Riesling or Pinot Noir
- BBQ Chicken = Malbec
- Seafood Pizzas = Sauvignon Blanc
- Argentine Carne = Malbec or Torrontes
- Meat Deluxe = Cabernet
