Barcelona Cava Bar – Can Paixano
On a recent trip to Barcelona, the lovely host at our hostel – Thomas let us in on some insider information. He explained that just around the corner on Carrer de la Reina Cristina down near the port, we would find a tucked away little bar for Cava. His advice was, it is great but you have to be pushy. Here I was thinking wine bars were suppose to be classy joints where you definitely don’t have to get your elbows out – I was intrigued!
We finally found the little bar, tucked away on a back street. A tiny rectangular bar, which had people spilling out of it onto the street. It was packed! We soon found out why it is the most popular bar in the area with bottles of Cava ranging from 2 Euros upwards and glasses at 80 cents. Bargain! The only rule in this bar is that you must order food in order to drink – very smart!
We ended up getting 2 plates, one with delish bites of cheese and the other with some dried meat. The Cava as expected for under a 5iver wasn’t going to be top class so we figured we would just order the same as nearly everyone else in the bar. The Can Paixano Rosé semi-secco. Not really my Cava of choice but it was more the experience of it all which I loved; the old style sparkling ‘coupe’ glasses supposedly shaped off Marie Antoinette’s breasts (however since the coupe dates back to 1663 before Marie was born that could be quite tricky to prove, it is probably more likely a rumoured drunken observation), the hot chatter in amongst the crowd which ranged from oldies to youngins and the back up supplies of cheese and meat hanging overhead whilst we got cosy with strangers in amongst the pupitre’s and other sparkling wine motifs.
I would definitely recommend going to visit this bar however beware it is true you need to be pushy and you can’t be bothered by limited space to move. There is just enough space to raise your glass to slaud and drink! For 10 Euro for 2 people it is a deal not to be missed.
