Bickley Valley Wineries: Wine Tasting at Aldersyde Estate
I have to admit, I do get a little giddy about visiting new wineries. I love hearing the story about how the vineyard came to be and getting to know the people behind the wines. On a recent trip up to the Perth Hills to visit a few of the Bickley Valley wineries we stumbled upon Aldersyde Estate, previously known as Piesse Brook Wines. I fell in love as soon as we drove up the driveway!
Having grown up with border collie dogs, the two gorgeous black and white Aldersyde collies stole my heart immediately. Wine dogs, Oban and Zoe warmly greeted us and showed us to where the cellar door was. I loved the little terrace out from the cellar door with its vine covered roofing and the stunning brightly coloured flower pots and vases on the table – such a picturesque setting overlooking the vines.
The cellar door is in fact in the actual working winery. So to the right as you enter you have the tasting counter and to the left you have all the stainless steel tanks. If you poke around a bit further like I did, past the tasting counter you’ll find a door which gives you a view of all the oak barrels on a lower level. It’s so great to be able to see where all the action takes place and the equipment.
Alydersyde is a family run business by mother & daughter team, Di and Lara. Mum, Di, looks after the cellar door, whilst Lara looks after the vineyard and winemaking side of things (prior to taking over the business in 2007, Lara worked for Cape Mentelle in Margaret River as the Assistant Winemaker). All the grapes are grown on the property and virtually everything is done by the hands of the family and extended family which I think is very nice. I wonder how much of the wine the family drinks for labour payments 🙂
We had fabulous chats with Di who was super friendly and guided us through a lovely tasting. Aldersyde produce Chardonnay, Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. I really enjoyed the Shiraz and Cab Sauv at the cellar door. The Chardy wasn’t open for tasting due to limited quantities, however you could purchase a bottle – I couldn’t resist and I was pleasantly surprised when I opened it. Here’s what I thought of the wines:
Aldersyde 2013 Chardonnay, $24
Crisp white gold on the eye. Aromas of oak laced with spiced pears and orange rind. In the mouth it’s thick & smooth with a super refreshing finish. Well balanced and boy am I glad I took the risk in buying it even though I couldn’t try it at the cellar door #winning
Aldersyde 2010 Shiraz, $22
Garnet gemstone colour on the eye. Vibrant aromas of cherries & blackberries laced with licorice, dark chocolate and spice. On the palate it’s earthy yet fruity with rich tannins and a barky finish. Lots of oomph in this local Shiraz. Big thumbs up from Mr.Spittoon too (he’s becoming a slave for Shiraz this winter!)
Aldersyde 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon, $22
Deep sexy plum red on the eye. With aromas of blackberries, cedar wood and dark chocolate truffles. On the palate it’s a glass full of dark black fruits, black jelly beans, juicy plums and the tannins just massage the mouth! Lovely red for this very chilly spring weather!
