Summer Wine Trends 2020-2021

Wow, what a year 2020 has been! It has gone equally slow as it has gone fast I find.

Since popping out Baby TC in April, it’s safe to say my wine consumption has gone up and I am definitely back on the wine-wagon. Yeeehha!

The lovely folks at Dialogue PR recently invited me to a Trends & Innovation Showcase online wine tasting and it got me thinking that I’d like to put together a blog post on what is currently trending in the wine industry and some of my predications for wine trends in 2021.

So without further adieu, let’s grab a glass of vino and get stuck in:

Shop small & local

There’s been a lot of heartache in 2020. And being a small business owner myself, my thoughts have really gone out to those small businesses who have had major struggles this year. Including the many wineries around the country who have had to shut cellar doors, cancel events and who have not only been impacted by Covid-19 but by the terrible bush fires at the start of 2020.

I think a lol of people have realised the importance of shopping small and local and I definitely think that’ll carry through to 2021.

Magnums and large wine bottles

With Covid-19 restrictions easing and everyone being keen to catch up with family and friends, I have no doubt magnums and your larger than normal wine bottles will be the wine choice for many catch ups this summer.

Sustainable wine drinking

This was a trend highlighted in the online tasting I was invited to attend recently, and I 100% agree with it. People are far more environmentally conscious these days, including us wine drinkers!

A new wine range to recently hit the scenes from New Zealand is Round Theory Wines. Apart from the very funky stocky bottles, these wines are perfect for those of us who are environmentally conscious and looking to live a more sustainable wino life.

So how are they sustainable?

• They offset at least double their carbon emissions having partnered with CarbonClick to sure they are Climate Friendly
• They are sustainably grown and sourced + put into glass bottles that are 30% lighter and 35% shorter and made from clear glass to improve their carbon footprint
• The labels are printed on recyclable stock and the inks are environmentally friendly
• They are all vegan friendly wines

There is a Marlborough Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and White Field Blend alongside a Hawkes Bay Rose in the range currently (potentially a Chardonnay and reds to come).

I recently tried the Pinot Gris and I have to admit I found it very easy to consume. It was light, fresh and thirst quenching.

The round Theory Wines are available at Dan Murphy’s and BWS for $23.

Lighter & Lower Calorie Wine

I think most of us know that if you’re trying to be ‘healthy’ and potentially loose weight, then cutting out alcohol is a good way to do it. However, if you’re reading this blog, then you’re probably like me and want to drink wine and have a healthy balance when it comes to diet and fitness.

This is where lower alcohol, aka lower calorie wine comes into play.

A new player to recently emerge in the market is State of Light Wines. The labels are gorgeous and the Rose for instance weighs in at only 7% Alcohol.

This New Zealand wine brand has 35% less calories and 45% less alcohol compared to a 13% alc/vol wine.

I recently tried the rose and it was so easy to drink. More on the sweeter side for my taste buds, however definitely a great choice for a lighter alcohol wine. Think berry and watermelon flavours. Great summer thirst quencher, that’s for sure!

Pink is in!

Vodka with a Wine Fetish

Pink spirits are in! Pink gin has been trending for awhile now, so why not pink vodka?

Being a pink girl myself, I had no doubt I’d love the new SVEDKA Rosé Vodka. In fact I am truly converted, and it’s not just because of the pretty colour. I am now a total fan-girl for this new Rosé infused vodka because it is darn right delicious!

It’s only got 5% Rosé in it, so just a hint to give it a delicious lick of flavour. And if you’re like me and immediately think it’ll be sickly sweet, it’s not at all. We have just been drinking it with soda water and if we’re feeling fancy we chuck in a Wild Hibiscus Flower. Delicious and I have no doubt when this bottle runs out, I’ll be buying another.

Plus it’s 30% abv, so slightly lower in alcohol than your typical vodka too. So it’s healthier right 😉

Pink Prosecco

I am yet to try Pink Prosecco, but I have a bottle in the fridge ready to pop this weekend! The lovely folks at Gruppetto Vino have sent me a bottle to taste and I can’t wait to get stuck in. To be honest, it looks bloody moreish.
