A Perth City Wine Tasting with a View!
There are so many things that can affect your perception of a wine if you are tasting with an open mind. From the company you’re with, to the atmosphere and setting of where you are, to your mood that day. This is the very reason why I always urge my family and friends to give each and every wine a second chance if the first date wasn’t a good one. Who knows it may just tickle your taste buds the second time around.
A couple of weeks ago I attended a wine tasting as part of the Eat Drink Perth Festival and it’s safe to say the atmosphere and setting ticked all the boxes of an amazing night tasting local WA wines.
A big thanks to Karina and Debbie Preston from Horizon Events Perth for inviting Mr. Spittoon and I along. We actually met Karina & Debbie on our Explore Tours Perth adventure of the Bickley Valley in Feb. I loved the sound of their small pop-up events which aim to give wine-lovers like you and me a more intimate wine tasting experience. I had no doubt this event was going to be beautiful as they have creativity oozing out of them!
The Setting – Perth’s Bell Tower
The event was held at Perth’s Bell Tower. Which of course I had seen plenty of times, but had never actually been up. I didn’t even realise you could have events there! However saying that I was most pleasantly surprised – what a spot for a bit of evening wine drinking!
We were greeted by the lovely Bell Tower staff down the bottom and directed to the lift to head up to floor 6. The 6th level is open air with absolutely smashing views of the Swan River and Perth City – it was fabulous to see the new Elizabeth Quay from such a lovely angle too!
As expected there were beautiful decorations adorning the space to give us all a bit of a vineyard/bush feel. The lighting was low and relaxing (I still haven’t got the knack for taking very good low-light photos with my camera, so excuse those!) and the whole event just had a really cool, laidback yet elegant feel to it.
The live music consisted of a solo artist who played some awesome tunes. I totally have to give him a shout out as his groovy, chilled-out rendition of Boom Boom by the Venga Boys was brilliant! Who knew there could be a mellow version of such a song!
The Wine Tasting
At the beginning of the night, Karina welcomed us and introduced us to the wines we’d be trying that evening. We were treated to wines from Whicher Ridge, Talisman, Fairbrossen and Killbery. Plus we were lucky enough to be joined by Cathy from Whicher Ridge and Dee from Talisman who mingled with everyone throughout the night.
It was a progressive tasting matched with delectable little canapes, we didn’t have to move an inch! As we soaked up the views, the ladies brought around the wines for us all to try and have a wee chat. Tt was nice and laidback and I have to admit there were some stunning vinos on offer. The Whicher Ridge Sparkling Shiraz was a favourite alongside the Talisman Fume – I may have even asked for seconds of both. Ooops 🙂
Here’s the full listed of what we tried:
- Talisman Riesling 2015
- Talisman ‘Barrique’ Sauvignon Blanc Fume 2014
- Fairbrossen Dry Harvest 2016

Here is a couple of pictures of the food, as mentioned I need to get better at my low lighting photography. However it’s safe to say the food was gorgeous!
Mr. Spittoon and I had a fantastic night – it was an awesome venue for a wine tasting with fantastic wines, food and company!
